Temporary Suspended Platforms are known in the construction industry as swing scaffolds, gondolas and baskets, some even call it a skyjack. The correct term used in Construction Regulations however is Temporary Suspended Platform or TSP. The legal requirements are discussed in our blog on the home page. Make sure your Temporary Suspended Platform supplier is competent.

TSP 1 – Suspended Platform Operator
This program is designed to satisfy the requirements for Temporary Suspended Platform operators as required by Construction Regulations 2014, Section 17 (12) (c) and SANS 10295 part 2.
At the end of this training the candidate will be able to
- Demonstrate an inspection of the erected TSP before each shift
- Testing of the TSP safety devices prior to use
- Explain action to be taken on discovery of a suspected default
- Execute emergency procedures in case of a power failure
- Demonstrate emergency procedures in case of a malfunction
- Use an emergency handle to reset a skylock in a “no power” event
- Park the platform and secure at the end of a shift

TSP 2 – Erector
This program provides the competency for persons who assemble, install, relocate and dismantle TSP’s in a safe and efficient manner under supervision of a competent TSP Supervisor appointed in terms of Construction Regulation 17(1).
At the end of this training the candidate will be able to
- Demonstrate the securing of goods for transportation using a selection of webbing, straps or ropes
- Demonstrate the safe weight distribution on packed vehicles
- List the different types of TSP’s
- Explain the definitions associated with TSP’s
- Demonstrate proper care in handling steel wire rope
- Demonstrate assembly and erection of TSP’s with a selection of different top fixings including outriggers, parapet clamps, wire rope slings and trestles
- Demonstrate procedures for relocating the erected TSP
- Demonstrate the testing and installation of a safety brake (skylock)
- Demonstrate the pre use visual inspection of TSP
- Demonstrate testing of safety devices including skylock, emergency stop and break release
- Demonstrate a no power decent
- Demonstrate procedures for securing a TSP at the end of a shift
- Demonstrate basic fault finding procedures
- Demonstrate the de rigging of an erected TSP

TSP 3 – Supervise, Inspect and Control the Use of Temporary Suspended Platforms
- Describe the different types of suspended access equipment as defined in SANS 51808.
- List the types of Temporary Suspended Platforms.
- Calculate rated loads on suspended platforms based on the guidelines of SANS 51808.
- Calculate the stability of suspension rigs based on the guidelines of SANS 51808.
- Calculate building loads of various top rigs based on the guidelines of SANS 51808.
- Explain the impact of the “WLL of hoists” on the stability of suspension systems
Explain the minimum requirements of Temporary Suspended Platform design as outlined in SANS 51808 - List the safety devices required for Temporary Suspended Platforms as contained in SANS 51808
- Demonstrate a risk assessment for the installation of a TSP using various suspension rigs including: stalks & weights, parapet clamps and holding down brackets, slings.
- Evaluate a worksite and prepare a fall protection plan.
- Explain methods to mitigate site specific hazards relating to the Temporary Suspended Platform.
- List and explain the operating problems and malfunctions which may affect TSP’s.
- Explain hazards relating to inclement weather and appropriate responses.
- Explain the legal requirements pertaining to the installation and use of TSP’s.
- Develop an OCP for installation of different top rigs including weights & stalks, parapet clamps and holding down brackets.
- Demonstrate the installation of a TSP’s within the limitations of the OCP; using different top rigs including weights & stalks, parapet clamps and holding down brackets.
- Demonstrate a performance test of an installation.
- Explain the requirements for operator certification in terms of the construction regulations.
- Demonstrate procedures which must be followed in case of a malfunction or emergency.
- Explain the requirements for training and certification of operators and supervisors in terms of SANS 10295 part 2.
- Explain the contractors legal duty in terms of fall protection devices.
- Demonstrate an assessment of an operator’s ability to use controls and safety devices.
- Explain the procedures which should be followed to conduct a daily inspection of the platform and suspension rig.
- Demonstrate an inspection of a TSP and verify operator compliance.
- Explain the procedures for dealing with defects
