FAQ
How many safety representatives should there be in an organisation?
In terms of Section 17 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, an employer with more than 20 employees at a workplace must designate health and safety representatives. As a general rule, shops and offices require at least one representative per 100 employees or part thereof, while other workplaces require at least one per 50 employees or part thereof.
Do safety representatives require any training?
Yes. Health and safety representatives must have sufficient knowledge and training to perform their functions effectively. The employer should ensure that representatives receive appropriate training for their workplace responsibilities and the hazards they may encounter.
What are the main functions of the safety representative?
A health and safety representative helps monitor workplace safety by identifying hazards, reviewing safety measures, investigating employee safety complaints, participating in incident investigations and making recommendations to the employer. Representatives may also conduct workplace inspections and participate in health and safety committee activities.
